“Baby Shark ” began as a camping song, where each member of a shark family is introduced with different hand movements. Different versions of the song have sharks hunting fish, eating a sailor, or killing people who then go to heaven.
The song Baby shark was popularized by a video produced by Pinkfong, a brand of education the smart study of South Korea, titled Baby Shark (Hangul: 상어 가족; RR: Sang-EO Gajok; In. Family shark) Posted on November 25, 2015, which won over 140 million views of November 2018. This version of the song begins with the bars of Antonín Dvorák Symphony No. 9 reminiscent of the music of the movie Jaws. The song has a family of sharks that will hunt a school of fish that escape safety. It became a viral video in Indonesia in 2017, and throughout the year it extended to many other Asian countries, particularly those in Southeast Asia. The mobile application was one of the 10 most downloaded in the Family applications category in South Korea, Bangladesh, Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia in 2017. As of November 2018, the dance version of the song “Baby Shark “, uploaded on June 17, 2016, received over 1.9 billion views from around the world, making it the 30 most watched videos on YouTube.
Due to its popularity, it has stimulated an online dance mania (or known as Baby Shark Challenge) around the world while quoting as “The next big thing after the Gangnam Style domain “. K-Pop groups, including the generation of girls, twice, red Velvet and Black Rose were credited with the spread of the viral song through their music and dance coverage, specifically on their television shows and featured concerts. The song began to be viral in the Western world in August 2018. In September 2018, Ellen DeGeneres released her own version of the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and James Corden made a late-night version show with James Corden.
While the English version has only listed members of the Shark family, the Korean version says breast shark is “Pretty “, Papa shark is “Strong “, Grandma shark is “Kind ” and grandpa shark is “cool “. In January 2018, the South Korean newspaper Kyunghyang Shinmun published a first-page editorial condeming these letters as sexist. In May 2018, the Korean Freedom Party began to use the “Baby Shark ” to promote its candidates by alerting Smartstudy to threaten legal action on copyright infringement.
