In a flashback (from Finding Nemo), he joins Marlin-a clownfish in search of his missing son Nemo-after accidentally swimming in it.
A year after meeting Marlin and Nemo, Dory lives with them in his Recife. One day, Dory has a flashback and remembers her parents. She decides to look for them, but her memory problem is an obstacle. Suddenly remember that they lived in the “Jewel of Morro Bay, California” on the other side of the ocean, when Nemo mentions the name.
Marlin and Nemo accompany Dory on their journey. With the help of Crush, his sea turtle friend, they ride present-day California to California. Upon arrival, they explode a shipwreck full of lost cargo, where Dory accidentally awakens a giant Humboldt squid, who chases them down and nearly devours Nemo. They manage to catch Lula in a large shipping container, and Marlin Repreys Dory to endanger. Her feelings hurt, Dory travels to the surface for help where she is captured by staff members from the trio’s neighboring destination, the Marine Life Institute.

Hank, who fears being released back to the ocean, agrees to help Dory find his parents in exchange for his record label. In an exhibition, Dory finds his childhood friend Destiny, a myopic whale shark, who used to communicate with Dory through tubes, and Bailey, a beluga whale, who erroneously believes he has lost his ability to echolocate. Dory subsequently has life flashbacks with his parents and strives to remember details. She finally remembers how she was separated from her parents: she heard her mother cry one night, was to reclaim a shell to cheer her up, and was swept away by a stream of vegetation in the ocean.
Marlin and Nemo are trying to rescue Dory. With the help of two California sea Lions sloth called Fluke and rudder and a common Loon named Becky, they manage to get into high school and find it in the piping system. Other Blue tangs tell them that Dory’s parents escaped from high school a long time ago to look for her and never came back, leaving Dory believing they were dead. Hank recovers Dory from the tank, leaving behind Marlin and Nemo. He is then seized by one of the officials and inadvertently drops Dory into the drain, throwing it into the ocean. As he wanders aimlessly, he finds a trail of shells; Remembering that, as a young man, his parents had set a similar path to help her find her way home, she follows him. At the end of the trail, Dory finds an empty brain coral with several paths of shells leading to it. When he turns to go out, he sees his parents Jenny and Charlie at a distance. They tell her that they spent years paving the way for her to follow them in the hope that she would eventually find them.
Marlin, Nemo, and Hank end up in the truck bringing in several aquatic creatures to Cleveland. Destiny and Bailey escape their exposure to help Dory rescue them. Once aboard the truck, Dory persuades Hank to go back to sea with her, and together, they kidnap the truck and drive it on busy roads, creating havoc, before hitting it at sea, releasing all the fish. Dory, along with his parents and new friends, returns to Recife with Marlin and Nemo.
In a post-credits scene, finding Nemo’s Tank Gang, still trapped inside his plastic bags (now covered in seaweed), arrives in California a year after floating across the Pacific Ocean, where they are caught by members of the Institute’s staff of marine life.
