Known as the Aura Pokémon, Lucana can detect and manipulate aura (波導 hadō), a special kind of energy that is emitted by all living creatures. Lucana also appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. since its debut in the Pokémon series, Lucana received a generally positive reception. It has appeared in various forms of merchandise, including figurines, stuffed toys and the Pokémon collectible card game.
The main role of Lucana in the anime is his appearance in the eighth film of Pokémon, Pokémon: Lucana and the Mystery of Mew. In the film, Lucana is a servant of a nobleman named Sir Aaron in a renaissance thematic city called Cameron Palace. Aaron had trained this Lucano to manipulate aura. Lucana thinks of Sir Aaron as his master and intimate friend, though after Aaron caught him in a magic cane at the beginning of the film, Lucana begins to question any Pokémon-human relationship. The Lucana in the film, expressed in English by Sean Schemmel, can speak human tongues with telepathy. Lucana sacrificed himself to save the tree from the beginning, though the credits showed him to Sir Aaron in the afterlife, where he cheerfully ate a bar of chocolate.
