Pokémon is the contraction of two English words: pocket, which means pocket; and monster, which means a monster. Thus, a pokémon is a “pocket monster”, a fictional creature popular in video games and cartoons.
The Pokémon phenomenon began as a video game of the genre RPG, created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. Later, the game was adapted for anime drawings and movies.
Originally, in the first generation, 151 different species of Pokémon were introduced. Currently, however, 720 pokémons have been revealed, each with distinct characteristics.
Most Pokémon undergo metamorphosis, evolving into more advanced beings with a different aesthetic. Over time they also learn new techniques or attacks that they can use in combat.
Most Pokémon have three stages of evolution, meaning they can undergo up to two transformations.
With the success of the anime in the late 1990s, a number of Pokémon games emerged, the first for Nintendo\’s Game Boy console. Later, online Pokémon games were created, such as Pokémon Deluge.
